Welcome to the
Town of Clifton
The Town of Clifton is comprised of Cranberry Lake, Newton Falls - including Windfall - and a small portion of Star Lake. The Town itself has much to offer. Located in the beautiful Adirondacks, the Town is surrounded by rivers, lakes and mountains for your enjoyment. This also brings many recreational opportunities: camping, hiking, fishing, swimming, kayaking and canoeing, hunting, 4-wheeling, snowmobiling and cross country skiing are only a few activities you can enjoy in this area. Make use of the Clifton Community Library, located within the Clifton Community Center in Cranberry Lake. Enjoy camping at the NYS Cranberry Lake Campsite, fishing & boating in Cranberry Lake and Newton Falls. You can also try your swing at the Clifton Fine Golf Course - a joint activity of the Towns of Clifton and Fine, located in Star Lake. Delight in ongoing events at the Clifton Fine Arena, also located in Star Lake. Added to this is the Clifton Fine Hospital and the Clifton Fine School.

Hamlet of Newton Falls
The hamlet of Newton Falls, in the Town of Clifton, was named after James Newton. Newton built a sawmill in 1894 which then became the Newton Falls Paper Mill. It was constructed as a mill town and includes several Sears houses on the Newton Falls Road (County Route 60). Newton Falls was a very active town with more than 800 residents, even at one time sustaining an A&P Grocery Store, a bowling alley, and the Newton Falls Hotel, which still stands, but is closed to the public. However, the closing of the J&L Mines in 1978 and the Paper Mill in 2011 has brought with it a decrease in population as with most mill towns. Although industry has left Newton Falls, it offers plenty of outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and camping. Plans are in the works to add a Christmas tree farm and a sugar bush across the river on 120 acres of what used to be papermill property.
